Welcome to the mirror of the official #Unix homepage!

UNIX! Live free or die!

What #unix is all about

On #unix, we talk about unix - latest kernel revisions, neat shell tricks, new programs, and brag about how long we've kept our machines up. We offer help on all sorts of things, from named to networks to X routines. (Ok, so we talk about sex from time to time too.)

One thing that must be pointed out right up front is that we don't like lamers at all. In fact, we have a device called a lame-o-metre which helps us decide when to kick lamers. Something to keep in mind - We have a high density of IRCops who regular in the channel. We also have the resources to make you go away for a long time. It wouldn't be a bright idea to mess with us. :)

We also don't talk about certain things. We do NOT talk about DOS. People come to us all the time asking us for DOS info. We don't do DOS. If we did dos, we'd be in #dos now, wouldn't we. Same goes for Windows. We also don't talk about IRC, or IRC bots. If you need irc help, there is a #irchelp channel. Even #irchelp doesn't do bots anymore, so you're SOL if you don't know how to run one. Hacking is also a big no-no. We don't trade accounts in #unix.

Rules of the channel

If the information presented here doesn't answer your question, and you think you have to ask on #unix, think about this first. #unix is NOT an online help channel. It is a favor provided by us that we answer questions presented to us. We do not have to help you with your problem; you aren't paying us enough. Keep that in mind when you ask. If you want to gain our favor so that we will help you, when asking your question, follow these guidelines:
  1. Be PATIENT. Ask your question, and WAIT.
  2. Always read the manpage first! This is your umpteenth warning!
  3. Do NOT shout your question. Printing in all CAPS will get you kicked.
  4. Do not repeat your question. Do not repeat your question. Do not repeat your question. Wait a while, we may be busy with other things; we have lives.
  5. Do not use bolding, highlighting, underlining, or things that stand out. AND DON'T BEEP! You HAVE been warned!
  6. Do NOT flood.
  7. The protocol is to speak English.
One last thing, don't ask a question covered in the FAQ; you will be kicked.
